Unrefined Nutrients was founded by Nicola Inger Scruby — a passionate mother of two (soon to be three!) and nutritionist with a deep commitment to supporting mothers and children in feeling their best, naturally.

Nicola has a background in Clinical Nutrition, an Advanced Diploma in Health Science (Nutrition), and a Master’s certification in Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Infant Nutrition. After her first son, Nicola worked in a busy mother’s clinic where she guided women through pregnancy and postpartum, helping them replenish their nutrient stores and regain their energy. Throughout this time she also worked with Mothers of toddlers who were experiencing food aversions and eczema. Despite her strong food-first philosophy, she saw first-hand how common it was for both mums and little ones to fall short on essential nutrients — whether from morning sickness, food aversions, time constraints, or the general chaos of modern parenting.

It became clear that supplementation was often necessary — but the options on the market were either filled with additives, hard to absorb, or not suitable for both mum and child. Around the same time, Nicola was navigating her own challenges at home: her toddler, struggling with constant daycare bugs, had developed food aversions and a dwindling appetite. While recovering from postpartum herself, their family went through a rough patch of illness — RSV, Influenza, Pneumonia, gastro — you name it.

“I tried everything to get nutrients into my son,” Nicola recalls. “Soups, juices, powders in his water — but he refused them all. At this point he had lost weight and one day I asked him, ‘If you could eat anything right now, what would it be?’ He said, ‘A milkshake?’ And that’s when it clicked.”

From that moment, Nicola began creating what she called her "immunity milkshakes" — blending wholefood powders and immune-supportive ingredients into something her son would actually enjoy.  That humble shake became the inspiration behind what is now our Kid’s Immune Protein. Alongside the milkshake, Nicola also developed a story for her son about the “guards” in our tummy who help to fight illness and keep us healthy. The story about the guards in our tummy is now the inspiration behind our Kid’s unique print (on our packaging and drink bottles!).
