Gut Health for Kids: Why 70% of Immunity Starts in the Gut

If you've ever felt like your child catches every bug going around daycare, you're not imagining it. The average child experiences 6 to 12 colds per year in their first few years of life, and if they're in group care, it can feel like a never-ending cycle.

But here's something that surprised even me when I first studied it: around 70% of your child's entire immune system lives in their gut. Not in their lungs, not in their blood. Their gut. Which means that supporting gut health isn't just about digestion. It's about building a stronger immune foundation from the inside out.

What does "gut health" actually mean for kids?

When we talk about gut health, we're really talking about the gut microbiome: the trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that live in your child's digestive tract. These tiny organisms do so much more than help with digestion. They help produce vitamins, regulate the immune system, protect against harmful pathogens and even influence mood and behaviour through what's known as the gut-brain axis.

A healthy microbiome has diversity. Lots of different species of good bacteria, all working together. When this balance gets disrupted (through illness, antibiotics, a limited diet, or stress), it can show up in ways you might not expect.

Signs that your child's gut health may need support:

Frequent colds or infections, bloating or tummy pain after meals, constipation or loose stools, skin issues like eczema, food intolerances or sensitivities, irritability or mood changes (especially after eating), and poor appetite or selective eating.

I saw this constantly when I was working in clinic with mums and their toddlers. A child who seemed to "always be sick" or who had unexplained skin issues, and when we looked at their diet and gut health, the puzzle pieces started fitting together.

Prebiotics vs probiotics: what's the difference?

These two words get thrown around a lot, so let me break it down simply.

Probiotics are the good bacteria themselves. They're live microorganisms that, when consumed in the right amounts, can benefit your child's health. You'll find them naturally in fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and miso.

Prebiotics are the food that feeds those good bacteria. They're a type of dietary fibre that passes through the upper digestive tract undigested and reaches the large intestine, where the beneficial bacteria ferment it. Think of prebiotics as the fertiliser for your child's internal garden.

Best food sources for kids:

Probiotic-rich foods: Natural yoghurt (with live cultures), kefir, miso soup, tempeh, sauerkraut (start small!)

Prebiotic-rich foods: Bananas (especially slightly green), oats, garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, apples, flaxseeds, and resistant starch (like cooked and cooled potato or green banana flour)

The tricky part? Getting toddlers to eat enough of these foods consistently. My oldest went through a phase where yoghurt was the only probiotic food he'd touch, and even then, only if it was the "right" brand. So I get it. This is exactly why we included both a prebiotic (Queensland green banana resistant starch) and a probiotic (1.5 billion CFU of Bacillus coagulans) in our Kids Immune Protein. Why Bacillus coagulans (and not just any probiotic)?

Not all probiotics are created equal, especially when it comes to kids. The gut-brain connection in children

This one is fascinating (and something I wish more parents knew about). The gut and the brain are connected through what's called the vagus nerve, and they communicate constantly. This is why your child might complain of a sore tummy when they're anxious, or why digestive issues can sometimes show up alongside behavioural changes.

Research is increasingly showing that the gut microbiome plays a role in producing neurotransmitters like serotonin (in fact, approximately 90% of the body's serotonin is produced in the gut). For children who seem emotionally dysregulated, irritable or anxious, supporting gut health alongside their emotional wellbeing can make a real difference.

After antibiotics? Here's what I do at home

Antibiotics are sometimes necessary (and I'm grateful for them when they are), but they don't discriminate between good and bad bacteria. After a course of antibiotics, I focus on rebuilding my boys' gut health by increasing probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt and kefir, adding extra prebiotic fibre through oats, bananas and cooked-and-cooled potatoes, and continuing their daily Immune Protein which provides both a probiotic and prebiotic in one serve. It's not about perfection, it's about gently supporting recovery.

Simple ways to support your child's gut health

You don't need to overhaul your child's diet overnight. Small, consistent changes make the biggest difference over time. Here's where I'd start:

1. Prioritise variety over perfection. Aim for a range of plant foods across the week. Different coloured fruits and vegetables feed different strains of gut bacteria. Even exposure counts (remember, 10 to 20 exposures before a child may accept a new food).

2. Include prebiotic-rich foods daily. Oats, bananas and flaxseeds are easy wins for most kids. Green banana resistant starch can be added to smoothies without changing the taste.

3. Offer probiotic foods where you can. Natural yoghurt with live cultures is the easiest starting point. Kefir smoothies are another great option.

4. Minimise ultra-processed foods. These can negatively impact microbiome diversity. I'm not about restriction (we're all about balance in our house), but being mindful of the ratio helps.

5. Fill the gaps on tough days. This is exactly why I created Immune Protein.
