Zinc is one of those minerals that doesn't get a lot of airtime compared to iron or vitamin D, but it's quietly involved in almost everything that matters for a growing child. Immunity, appetite, growth, wound healing, taste perception and even sleep. And when kids don't get enough of it, the effects can be surprisingly far-reaching.
What really caught my attention when I was researching this was the cycle it can create. Low zinc reduces appetite. Reduced appetite means less food. Less food means even lower zinc. And the cycle just keeps going. For parents of fussy eaters, this was a lightbulb moment for me. Sometimes the fussiness isn't just a phase. Sometimes there's something nutritional driving it.

The zinc-appetite connection
Evidence suggests that fussy eaters have lower intakes, and sometimes lower blood levels, of key micronutrients including zinc. Both iron and zinc deficiency in early childhood can contribute to and perpetuate fussy eating by down-regulating the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin.
In simple terms: when zinc is low, your child's body doesn't signal hunger as effectively. They eat less. And because they're eating less, they're getting even less zinc. It's a feedback loop that can be really difficult for families to break without specifically addressing the zinc piece.
Zinc also influences taste perception. Children with low zinc may find that foods taste bland or different, which can contribute to food refusal and pickiness. This is one of those connections that doesn't get talked about enough.
What does zinc actually do?
Immune regulation: Zinc supports the development and function of immune cells, helping the body defend against viruses and bacteria. Children with zinc deficiency experience higher rates of respiratory infections and diarrhoeal illness. Cellular growth and repair: Essential for the rapid cell division that happens during childhood growth. DNA synthesis: Zinc is required for the body to make and repair DNA. Wound healing: It plays a direct role in tissue repair, which is particularly important for active, scrape-prone kids. Appetite regulation: Through its influence on ghrelin and taste perception. Sleep: One study linked zinc and iron deficiencies to sleep disturbances, including more frequent night wakings and shorter total sleep duration.
Signs of low zinc in children
Poor appetite or food refusal, frequent colds or infections, slow wound healing, skin issues (rashes, dry patches), white spots on fingernails, changes in taste perception, disrupted sleep patterns, and reduced growth.
A note on testing
Zinc can be tested via a blood test, but it's worth knowing that serum zinc levels don't always reflect total body stores accurately. If your child is showing several of the signs above, especially poor appetite combined with frequent illness, it's worth discussing zinc status with your GP and focusing on increasing zinc-rich foods and gentle supplementation regardless of the blood test result.

Best food sources of zinc
Oysters (cooked): 5.5mg per oyster. Beef (cooked): 5.1mg per 85g. Pumpkin seeds: 2.2mg per 30g. Rolled oats: 2.3mg per cup. Cashews: 1.7mg per adult handful. Cashew butter: 0.71mg per tablespoon. Chia seeds: 1.3mg per 2 tablespoons.
The challenge here is that the richest sources of zinc are foods that many toddlers won't eat (beef, oysters, pumpkin seeds). Oats and cashew butter are usually the most achievable options for young children, and this is where supplementation can play a genuine role in filling the gap.
How to break the cycle
Our approach with children is always: offer, expose, repeat, support. Although zinc supplementation has been shown to improve appetite and eating behaviours in some children, we always recommend a food-first approach where possible.
